Rosie Emerson

Rosie Emerson figures draw reference from archetype’s old and new, from Artemis to the modern day super model. Unrestrained in her technique she uses costume, intricate props, dramatic lighting, and playful collage to elevate her subjects to otherworldly, goddess like status. Staged without context or background, her subjects are objectified, adorned and manipulated, becoming an allegory of her own fantasy. The use of natural materials in her screen prints, such as ash, sawdust and charcoal shifts the focus of printmaking from precision and replication to the creation of unique, hand-finished prints with subtle textures. Her recent cyanotype works enable her to montage objects, with real size photographic negatives. Using the UV light from the sun to expose objects directly on the surface, she explores the interplay between painting, collage and photography.
